Katan is a thread, prepared by twisting a different number of silk filaments according to requirement. This gives a firm structure to the background fabric. Katan is a plain woven fabric with pure silk threads. It consists of two threads twisted together and is mostly used for the warp of light fabrics and sarees. Sometimes 2 filaments can be used to make the warp or weft to incorporate a texture or design.
Katan silk is the fine, soft and delicately lustrous kind of silk that has made Banarasi renowned the world over. Katan silk fabrics are made using the finest quality of Mulberry Silk in both the warp and the weft, woven in a plain weave.
A variation of Katan Silk fabric is Silk by Georgette (also called Katan Georgette or Summer Silk or Silk Georgette). This is a pure silk fabric and is obtained by using twisted silk yarns in the warp or the weft. The resultant silk fabric is thinner and lighter in weight than katan, making it suitable for wearing even in the hotter months of the year (hence, the name summer silk).
Kinkhwab is a rich, heavy silk fabric with an intricate pattern woven into it. Khinkwab textiles are largely used for ceremonial textiles and the resultant fabric is like woven gold, The weave produces intricate floral designs that appear embroidered on the surface of the fabric. The gold weave is so prominent that it almost covers the base fabric.
The Aada weaving of bel or a booti is an intricate art. The motifs woven from one end to the other of the rich silk body of a saree resemble diagonal stripes in either a Kadhiyal or Kadhwa weave. Most aada jaal or bootidar sarees often culminate into a teardrop shaped paisley buta or the Koniya at the ends of the pallu. The Koniya is an often used motif in indian textile that arrived with the Persian and Mughal influence in our design history. It draws inspiration from a mango or kairi as it is called in Sanskrit and Hindi. At Weaver Story the Aada sarees and dupatta are a throwback to vintage hand-woven splendor that we often reminisce
