In Banaras Chiffon and Georgette are interchangeably used and more often than not the weaver community calls it chiffon. Georgette is a high twist yarn with a crinkly surface. This texture comes due to the S and Z twist in both warp and weft. Chiffon is a closer cousin of georgette where the S and Z twist is in the alternate yarn. This also gives it more stretch compared to georgettes. Georgette, Chiffon and Chignon are all made from pure silk yarn though we do find synthetic versions made from Nylon and rayon in the market. Georgette fabric is lighter and drapes more freely
Phekwa is a weaving style from banaras, where the weft yarn is interlaced in the warp from one end to the other creating textures on the surface of the cloth also called the zamin. This can be done with single silk yarn or resham or zari, or both can be wound around shuttles.
This is one of the most widely used banarasi handloom weaving techniques where the motifs are woven together as opposed to kadhwa saress, thus taking lesser time in completing a saree. This weaving style leaves a large proportion of the silk or zari thread at the back of the saree where there is no motif at the front. These threads at the back are then cut, once the saree is complete. Mostly the ladies of the house help in cutting and cleaning this extra float
Jangla is one of oldest and most rich patterns, the Jangla is truly representative of a banarasi. Floral patterns, paisley intertwine in brocade or kadhwa weaving on silk, kora or satin fabric. An interplay of floral jaals cover the saree or dupatta in Kadhwa and Kadhiyal weave with meenakari to create a rich design with or without contrasting borders. The jaal is enhanced with jewelled meenakari. This is one of the oldest and most complex weaving techniques from banaras.
